Julia Roberts, existentialist?!

when Julia Roberts became a French major

I had to laugh when I saw this ad for Givenchy in a recent copy of the New York Times’s T magazine. We are more accustomed to the super-smiley actress, as seen in a publicity campaign for her film, Eat, Pray, Love

(based on the equally frothy memoirs by Elizabeth Gilbert), or in a head shot for Forbes magazine.

What happened, Julia?

Did you suddenly discover the wonderful French habit of gloom? been reading too much Sartre?!

  1. An ethnographic inquiry ? French Femme fatale compared to exhilaration and American Way of Life ? (Mais il y a aussi Lauren Bacall, qui a lu Sartre et qui a aussi vu “It’s a wonderfull life” de Capra. Et il y a Brigitte Bardot. Well…) Any way, the two images of Julia are also two attitudes to try to survive. Probably both side of the Ocean.
