A mini-quiz (and prize news!) about this year’s Bastille Day quiz, coming on July 14

New! This year we will offer a prize—an authentic assignat—to the person who submits the first set of correct answers to the 13th annual Bastille Day Quiz.* To test your revolutionary mettle, try to answer this question now:

On the assignat that will be awarded next week, for 5 livres, one can read : « Créé le 10 brumaire l’an 2 de la République française ».  Which of the following days is closest to that date? (p.s. There’s no prize for this mini-quiz, except the excitement of getting the right answer!)

  1. October 31, 1793
  2. April 2, 1792
  3. November 10, 1794
  4. January 1, 1791

The answer will be posted tomorrow.

Authentic assignat: prize for winner of next week’s 13th annual Bastille Day Quiz! (coming July 14, 2022)

*Rules of the game:

  1. The 13th annual Bastille Day Quiz will be posted on-line, on this blog, at 8am Pacific time (USA) on July 14, 2022.

2. To enter the game, type your answers in an email, with subject “Rev Quiz”, and send to the editor at jdouthwa@nd.edu .

3. Answers will be scrutinized by the editor on a first-come-first serve basis. The first set of correct answers to be received will be declared the winner. The winner’s name will be posted on the blog, with the correct answers, as soon as they are received on 7/14/22. If no one gets 100%, the highest scorer by midnight will be declared the winner on July 15, 2022, and the answers will follow.

4. The assignat seen here will be mailed at no expense to the winner, wherever they may live!

Bon courage!

  1. « Créé le 10 brumaire l’an 2 de la République française » refers to October 31, 1793.

Have a great Bastille Day, Julia.

Unfortunately, I will be in a plane and in airport terminals for most of the day and wont be able to participate in the Quiz until late.

    Warm regards,
